Balsam Bashing

Another successful year of “bashing” Himalayan Balsam (pulling up the plants) was carried this year, spearheaded by Usk Together For The Climate and supported by lots of willing volunteers.  This is such an important part of our commitment to encouraging and supporting our native environment and removing this invasive species from our river banks. Do pull up the plant where you can before it is in flower (otherwise you might end up encouraging the seeds to spread).  

Himalayan Balsam prevents native plants flourishing and reproducing due to its height which takes the light and it's pretty flower which attracts the insects to pollinate it. Its shallow roots dislodge the top soil and causes erosion of river banks and increases the chances of flooding.
