Nature Recovery and celebrating nature on our doorstep
1 in 6 species in Wales is in danger of extinction. In Usk we’re finding out which local plants and animals are in danger and what we can do to help them. Here are some of our recent activities:
Education and Skill-sharing
Exploring Nature with Young People at Usk Primary School, through a ‘Bioblitz’ (species-spotting on a single patch of ground).
Over 16s Workshop: led by an expert, this workshop taught us about surveying and recording wildlife, in association with Gwent Wildlife Trust.
Whole Town Talk: Making your garden Wildlife-friendly.
Animal parade
Getting creative with the local school
Showcasing and Networking
We run stalls at local ‘green’ events, such as the River Festival and Abergavenny’s Green Fair – and Usk Town’s Festivals and Fayres. Come and say hi and hang a wish for a green future on our wishing tree!
Roll-up your sleeves!
Hands-on invasive species removal. Invasive species contribute to more than half of animal and plant extinctions world-wide. By clearing Himalayan Balsam from the banks of the River Usk, we’re making way for our natural plants to regain some ground.
Celebrating
Research shows that the more familiar we are with the wildlife around us, the greater is our urge to protect it. Celebrating Nature through the spoken word, poetry and song lies at the heart of Together for the Wild.
